Back at the house, Jessica knew something different was up when Sophie went into the kitchen, opened the fridge, and pulled out chicken and vegetables.
âI would ask if youâre making a snack, but it would be a strange snack.â
âI havenât made dinner in a while, and it might make Mom and Dad happy if I do. They seemed a bit overwhelmed by the idea of us working with an FBI agent.â
âWorking with the FBI is a bit of an exaggeration. He asked us questions. Will your parents be happy eating something you cook?â
âI can cook. Mom taught me how when I was little.â After grabbing a large pan, Sophie next moved everything to a cutting board. âHow does a chicken stir-fry and fruit salad sound?â
âGreat. Can I help?â
âSure. Get out a big bowl for the fruit salad. Then cut up whatever fruit is ripe, making enough for the four of us.â
Jessica carefully cut up a couple of peaches, a plum, and some cherries.
Sophie put rice on to cook, then cut up the chicken and veggies. âI saw blueberries in the fridge. Throw some of those in there. And pour a little orange juice over it so the fruit doesnât turn brown.â
A few minutes later, Jessica stood back and admired her work. âI did it. I made a fruit salad. Anything else?â
âItâs good as is. You could add some honey and cinnamon to yogurt and make a sauce. Then itâs more of a dessert.â
Jessica grinned. âIâm on it.â She got out the three ingredients, combined them, and tasted as she went. âThis is great. Iâll make this when I get home.â She didnât think her mom would be too happy if she made a whole dinner because of the possible scary results, but Sophieâs parents were happy and appeared relaxed when Sophie told them about their day.
Uncle Lucas leaned back in his chair and listened as Sophie described how sheâd found the suitcase. Shaking his head in amazement, he spooned some fruit into a bowl. âIf the FBI want you to go back there with them, Iâll take time off work and tag along.â
âIs business okay, Dad? To be able to take time off in the middle of the day?â
âItâs fine. I did meet a man the other day who asked me about buying my business.â
Jessica said, âJust like Aunt April.â
âNot quite. Your aunt and I own the building Great Finds is in, and if she sold the business, she would also sell her inventoryâall of the antiques in the store. Her business is worth a lot to anyone. My business is different. Itâs based on my brains, and my office is a room in our house, so without me, it isnât worth much. The offer doesnât make sense.â
âThatâs another strange thing that Iâll have to think about.â Sophie slowly put a bite of fruit into her mouth.
Her dad rolled his eyes. âOur little crime fighter. Right, April?â
Her mother sighed. âYes.â
After dinner Jessica sat down in an old, comfy chair, and
